Rippon Building (ரிப்பன் கட்டடம்) - A Heritage Walk.
The Ripon Building is an iconic landmark in Chennai, serving as
the headquarters of the Greater Chennai
Corporation. It is an example of neoclassical architecture,
a combination of Ionic and Corinthian styles.
The Ripon Building is an all-white structure and is located near the Chennai
Central railway station.
It’s an architectural Marvel which Features
a 43-meter-high central tower
with a Westminster Quarter chiming
clock, installed in 1913.
The Ripon
Building has a fascinating history that dates back to the British colonial era.
- Commissioned in 1909: The
building was designed by G.T.S. Harris, and its foundation stone was laid
by Lord Minto, the then Viceroy of India.
- Construction and Naming:
Built by Loganatha Mudaliar, it took four years to complete, costing ₹750,000
at the time. It was named after Lord Ripon, the Governor-General of
British India, who is known as the Father of local self-government.
- Inauguration in 1913: The Madras Municipal Corporation moved into the Ripon Building in 1913, with P.L. Moore as its first president. The grand opening was attended by over 3,000 prominent citizens.
